Origin

Lower lateral fibula.

Insertion

Tubercle of the fifth metatarsal base.

Action

Everts the foot and plantarflexes the ankle — the ankle's lateral stabiliser against inversion sprains.

Nerve supply

Superficial peroneal nerve (L5–S1).

Blood supply

Peroneal artery.

Clinical relevance

An inversion injury can avulse its insertion — the fifth metatarsal tuberosity ('pseudo-Jones') fracture; peroneal tendon tears follow chronic ankle instability.
