Insertion
Base of the great toe's distal phalanx.
Action
Flexes the great toe — the final push-off of gait — and plantarflexes the ankle.
Nerve supply
Tibial nerve (L5–S2).
Blood supply
Peroneal artery.
Clinical relevance
Its tendon grooves the talus and sustentaculum tali behind the medial malleolus; dance-floor overuse causes FHL tenosynovitis, the 'dancer's tendonitis'.
