Superior border of the scapula near the suprascapular notch (inferior belly).
Insertion
Hyoid body (superior belly) — joined by an intermediate tendon over the internal jugular vein.
Action
Depresses and steadies the hyoid, tugging the cervical fascia to keep the internal jugular open.
Nerve supply
Ansa cervicalis (C1–C3).
Blood supply
Suprascapular artery.
Clinical relevance
Where it crosses the internal jugular vein it is the surgical boundary between level III and level IV cervical lymph nodes.
