Insertion
Medial border of the scapula between the spine and the inferior angle.
Action
Retracts and elevates the scapula, rotating it downward to lower the glenoid for adducted reaching.
Nerve supply
Dorsal scapular nerve (C5).
Blood supply
Dorsal scapular artery.
Clinical relevance
Winging and lateral scapular drift follow dorsal scapular palsy; rhomboid strain aches between the shoulder blades after carrying heavy backpacks.
