    Carpal tunnel syndrome

    The median nerve is squeezed in the carpal tunnel at the wrist, causing tingling, numbness and pain in the thumb and first fingers, often worse at night.

    Causes

    • Increased pressure in the carpal tunnel

    Risk factors

    • Female sex
    • Pregnancy
    • Diabetes and hypothyroidism
    • Rheumatoid arthritis
    • Obesity
    • Repetitive wrist work and vibrating tools

    Symptoms

    • Tingling and numbness in the thumb, index, middle and half the ring finger
    • Symptoms waking you at night; shaking the hand helps
    • Weak grip and dropping things
    • Wasting at the base of the thumb in severe cases
