MuscleThorax — lateral wall
Serratus anterior
Latin: M. serratus anterior
Location: Chest
View the serratus anterior in 3DOrigin
Outer surfaces of ribs 1–8/9 by fleshy digitations.
Insertion
Medial border of the scapula (anterior surface), from superior angle to inferior angle.
Action
Protracts the scapula (punching, pushing up) and upwardly rotates it with the trapezius for overhead abduction; holds the scapula against the rib cage.
Nerve supply
Long thoracic nerve (C5–C7).
Blood supply
Thoracodorsal and lateral thoracic arteries.
Clinical relevance
Long thoracic nerve injury (mastectomy, backpack straps) causes frank winged scapula — the serratus' digitations form the 'boxer's muscle'.
