Origin

Fibres from the modiolus, maxilla and mandible encircling the mouth.

Insertion

Mucosa and skin of the lips in a sphincteric loop.

Action

Closes and protrudes the lips — whistling, kissing, sucking and speech articulation.

Nerve supply

Facial nerve (CN VII) — buccal branches.

Blood supply

Facial and labial arteries.

Clinical relevance

Cleft-lip repair re-approximates its orbicular ring; facial palsy drools and slurs through its weakness.
