Function

Bears the concentrated load of the upper body on the mobile lumbar curve. The L2 nerve root joins the lumbar plexus, supplying hip flexors and anteromedial thigh skin.

Articulations (joints)

  • L1 above
  • L3 below

Clinical relevance

The tip of a standard lumbar puncture needle is aimed at the L3–4 or L4–5 interspace — the level just below L2 keeps the cord safe.
