Function

The longest sternal part — the flat plate where the true ribs' cartilages dock, closing the front of the rib cage over the heart and lungs.

  • Manubrium above
  • Xiphoid below
  • Costal cartilages 2–7

Clinical relevance

Sternal marrow aspiration is taken from the manubrium or upper body in some centres; sternal fractures signal major chest trauma and raise myocardial injury risk.
